How do I know that I have a God-given calling?

Kailo Training Institute is the fruit of our God-given calling to help people to put the trauma behind them and to grow in a dynamic relationship with God and other people. We are committed to training Christian Pastoral Counsellors by confirming their calling; enlarging their vision and breaking bondages.

Some bondages keep people tied up for years, such as the aftermath of trauma and heartache, the curse of poverty and unbelief. We can help people to experience salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

Christian Pastoral Counselling is practical soul-care for God’s people through the ministry of reconciliation. Galatians 6:2 NIV says: “Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ”. Counselling is helping people to grow in hope, maturity, faith and confidence in their relationship with God.

How do I know that I have a God-given calling? How do I know that I am gifted to help people? You discover that special calling and gifting by listening to the voice of God. Read your Bible prayerfully.

A God-given calling always grows from a living relationship with God. Listening to God’s promptings will fill you with deep joy, gratitude and passion for His Word and the ministry. A calling to help people is in the first place a calling to discipleship. Mat 28:19-20 NIV “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”.

This calling can never be larger or more important than your relationship with God. Isaiah 61:1-2 has to be the reflection in a counsellor’s heart:

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn

A God-given calling is more than a career choice or the commitment to be a missionary or even to be in full-time ministry. You may experience that you are talented in a specific skill and you long or dream of making that activity a larger part of your life. If you sense a nudge towards a specific form of service towards others, pray to God for guidance.

Your relationship with God is of the utmost importance because a calling must correlate with His Word. If your desire contradicts the Bible it is not from God. If anything pulls you away from God there are more questions than peace because God’s calling will always draw you closer to Him. Christian Pastoral Counselling is never an activity that you can do in your wisdom.

When God call you to serve Him and His people, He gives you peace and grace. As you go through the Christian Pastoral Counselling training you will be able to give an account of your testimony, your calling and your purpose in the Body of Christ. You will grow in wisdom and skill to help people because you will grow in wholeness and your relationship with God.
